Food Review #7: Britea Cafe

01/19/2020

Full of wanderlust? This cute cafe in the heart of Tuol Kork offers a quali-tea British experience.

Britea is an English tea house offering both bubble tea as well as traditional afternoon tea.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a large London telephone booth. Though the booth lacked in function, it made up for with its Instagram-ability.

We ordered the Britea set for three people. For a group of three, it was $9. Cheap if you consider that it was only $3 per person, but expensive if you consider that you could probably buy two small-sized KOI Hazelnut Milk Teas for the price of some tea.

Upon ordering the Britea tea set, you are led to a little niche lined with teacups and jars of tea leaves. There are three categories of tea: fruity, floral, and traditional. After smelling multiple jars, we went with the peach green tea. I am personally not a tea person so peach green tea, another one of my Koi favorites, seemed like a safer option. We were also able to pick from a beautiful wall of teacups. I chose a gold-rimmed floral cup.

We were seated downstairs. I wanted to sit upstairs since it was more spacious and there were more couches, but the upstairs was not open for tea until the downstairs was full. The decor was very cute and Christmassy downstairs though. I am unsure if this decor was seasonal or if it was just very British-themed (I visited this cafe during Water Festival, writers are kind of lazy). Either way, I thought the minimalist furniture with gold accents and marble floors and table tops were very tasteful.

Our tea arrived fairly quickly. It came with a plate of fruit, a pot of tea, and various methods of sweetening. I was disappointed that it didn't come with any sort of tea biscuits. It is not high tea. I shouldn't expect confectionaries or finger sandwiches.

The tea was a good temperature- maybe a little cold for my taste. I liked the taste of the tea. It could use a cube of sugar. The amount was a little disappointing. I would think that for 3 people you would get a little bit more tea. We finished it all too fast.

The teapot was empty but the menu was still full of drinks to try. We tried the classic milk tea and the King Fruit tea. The milk tea was, well, milk tea. It wasn't anything extraordinary. The King Fruit tea wasn't much better. It was overflowing with watermelon, passionfruit, apples, etc. Overall, it tasted like soap.

I would recommend Britea for those looking to take some cute instagram pics. I would most definitely not recommend it as a place to enjoy some drinks (stick with The Alley).
