Latent Talents: LIS Still Life Art

10/07/2022

"Art isn't exclusive; step into a foreign land through this impromptu gallery-displayed in a school hall near you!"

The elusive Room 401 is home to a mere 12 students of LIS' secondary population. Up in their lair, they've been spending the past few weeks honing and refining their craft-a cycle of arduous labor-and they've finally something to show for it. This is their first objective: seize a moment in time, and capture life at a glance; embrace still life.

As an introductory course, these young artists studied value. (For those with grade-school art comprehension, value is how light or dark a color tone is.) First-level students were required to fill an A3 sheet's worth of meticulous grayscale rendering. Second-level students were required to experiment with a new medium altogether: charcoal. The students were given free reign over the period, their only requirement being to finish the assigned piece by the due date. Things got messy fast-a stark contrast to the peaceful ambience imbued by Mrs. Ortiz's soft classical notes filtering through the speaker.

One week later and nine fresh pieces were taped to 401's whiteboard (with three more incoming), ready for a round of friendly critique. See them now after the Pchum Ben break, proudly hung on the third floor's bulletin board.

Hungry for variety? You'll be perfectly satiated with these dozen pieces. Denrich's delicate shading makes for a soft, gentle illustration. Contrast that with Borynet's mastery of shading and full use of the value scale. Serena's piece depicts a perfect balance between efficiency and painstaking detail. Somi and Yera's pieces picture a domestic, effeminate scene. Clara and EunChae depict a haunted eeriness. Sarah's odd anime figurine stands out. Conan and Minchan show beauty and grace. Yeonwoo and Minseo capture delicacy in a page.

"It was fun yet hard at the same because of the new medium."

- Somi

"It was quite challenging for me because I'm inexperienced with shading. So, I just tried, and it worked out."

- Name

"It was my first time doing [still life], but I learned a lot, and I would love to do it again."

- Minseo

Don't be shy. Peruse the third-floor halls and immerse yourself in these young artists' journeys to master composition, emphasize value, and fill their canvases with granular strokes and meticulous blending. Get lost in their world of fine art.
