Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Film Review!

11/20/2024

A visually stunning film with a mysterious and eerie vibe with jumpscares and fittingly creepy background music. The movie is a rollercoaster of emotions: there's always that underlying darkness that keeps things interesting, while also having heart-warming scenes.

I recently rewatched Tim Burton's movie: "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," and the first thing I thought was what I would do to be able to watch that movie for the first time again. I'm telling you this, It's a whirlwind of imagination that showcases Burton's talent in storytelling. If you're a fan of fantasy paired with a bit of horror, this movie will likely sweep you off your feet. I couldn't help but admire how every scene is intricately placed and everything comes together piece by piece for an adrenaline-rushing plot twist, making you feel like you're truly part of this peculiar universe.

The film follows Jacob Portman, played by Asa Butterfield. Jacob is just your average teenager trying to figure out his place in the world. When tragedy strikes, leading him to a hidden island and the mysterious Miss Peregrine, who's played by the gorgeous Eva Green. This place is like a refuge for children with unusual abilities like levitation, and controlling fire, and there's even a kid who has a huge animalistic mouth at the back of her head! It's hard not to get lost in this lively world where being peculiar is not just accepted but celebrated. Since everybody has their own differences, they all share a sense of belonging and connection with one another. Whenever they're met with an obstacle, they not only fight together but also for each other.

Miss Peregrine is such a lovable and memorable character. I would even go as far as saying she's my number one favorite character in this movie. Although, my first impression of her was that she seemed to have a gothic and mysterious personality.

Judging by her appearance alone, I actually thought she would be the mean, strict caretaker, who only uses the children for her own personal selfishness. In contrast, though, she has this wonderful balance of warmth and intensity that pulls you in.

Watching her protect these kids, you genuinely feel her loving relationship and commitment towards them.

I will say, however, that the pacing felt a bit off at times. Certain parts dragged, and the transitions between wholesome scenes and darker moments could be jolting. A few scenes felt like they followed a predictable pattern, which may leave some viewers already expecting the storyline, so it might not be a huge plot twist and they may want a bit more originality.

Nevertheless, "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" is ultimately a celebration of uniqueness. It speaks to anyone who ever felt like they didn't quite fit in, reminding us that our differences can also be our greatest strengths. Everyone is different in their own way, there's no such thing as 'bad' difference and 'good' difference, and this movie basically revolves around this statement. Whether you're in it for the unique visuals, the fantastic storyline, or simply because you saw a clip of this movie from TikTok, there's something here for everyone. So if you're looking for a film that's both adventurous and heart-pounding, give this one a go. You might just find yourself embracing your own peculiarities along the way!
