The Best 90s Rom-Coms
With the popularity of online streaming sites such as Netflix, there comes an unlimited selection of movies and shows. Though this eliminates the fear of there being a lack of entertainment, it also produces the dilemma of having to sift through hundreds of movies and shows to find ones that are worth watching and ones you will actually enjoy. I have found that most entertainment created today is not of the best quality in regards to the acting, production, and storyline. For this reason, I favor films, especially rom-coms, from the late 1900s and early 2000s; there is nothing quite like the comfort and nostalgia of a classic 90s rom-com. I have a few favorites that I can always trust to have the same charming effect and lift my mood.
Sleepless in Seattle
One of my all-time favorite rom-coms for its charming and lighthearted story. This film takes place in Seattle, where Sam and his young son, Jonah, have relocated after the recent death of his wife. Heavy with grief, Sam cannot sleep at night. Jonah, desperately yearning to revive his father's dampened joy, calls into a radio talk-show in hopes of finding him a companion, and persuades him to share his sorrows on air. This national radio broadcast catches the attention of a certain Annie Reed, located 2763 miles away in Baltimore, who is dissatisfied with the direction her life is taking. As her intrigue and investment in the sorry story of 'Sleepless in Seattle' deepens, she finds herself drawn towards the widower and she begins to question her own circumstance. With the steadfast nudge of Jonah, the two discontented adults find themselves caught in a whirlwind of improbable events that kindle a special bond between the pair that neither of them could have ever imagined possible.
You've Got Mail
This film reunites Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan from Sleepless in Seattle for a story filled with oodles of laughs and tears. Kathleen Kelly, a small independent bookshop owner, loathes Joe Fox, a mega bookstore magnate, who belongs to the family that owns a chain of colossal bookstores called Fox Books. Though they are already acquaintances, they anonymously and impartially meet once again through the Internet. Behind the protection of screen names, the two rivals communicate by way of email, never revealing their identity by giving specifics, such as their name or career. Kathleen and Joe find themselves falling for each other, both completely unaware of the others' identity and that he is trying to put her out of business. This heart-warming and playful film is an immediate spirit lifter and is sure to draw you in until the very end.
While You Were Sleeping
This comical film stars Sandra Bullock as Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a hopeless romantic and lonely Chicago transit token collector. The plot begins when she rescues Peter, her longtime crush whom she's never formally met, from an oncoming train. Upon arriving at the hospital, he is reported to be in a coma. A comment from Lucy is misinterpreted by Peter's family and causes them to mistake her for his fiancée. She does not correct them, and without hesitation, they warmly welcome her into their home. She is deeply bewildered as she finds herself being drawn to this affectionate family - something she never had - but specifically to Peter's younger brother, Jack. This unconventional romance is sure to produce lots of laughs and comedic relief.
